Greetings Humans.
Thursday 9th of July 2020
This is day one of Photography and Printmaking, we started with Photoshop with Ruby (our tutor for the day) learning how to do some effects on a photo. First we google search for an image, let that in mind we didn't need to find a free copy right image as its for experimental reasons, otherwise I would have tried finding a free copy right image for this lesson.
The image I used was a skull from google search, where the you can find through link of:
This is the imagine I originally used:

The resource we used, which Ruby suggested in class was photoshopessentials.com. A very easy to understand website with resources for those who are just learning Photoshop, like us. So the first effect we learned was the Retro 3D effect, which was found under the Photo Effects tab on the website page.
So after we found a "good" photo (ie not too small photo to edit), we copied photo by right clicking or shortcut on keyboard of Ctrl C, we then opened up Photoshop. It was recommended to copy image before we open up a new document on Photoshop so the program knows what the size of the canvas we need. After opening, right click on a new layer to paste the photo, or Ctrl V to paste onto canvas. Now the experiment begins.
With the step-by-step guidance from photoessentails.com and Ruby we went through the instructions to learn how to produce a "retro 3D Movie Effect". First we need to make duplicate layer of the photo to change the colour. The shortcut on keyboard to do it is Ctrl J, but if forgotten shortcuts to make duplicate layer hold and drag down to the new layer (circled in red below). On the website it is recommended to name your layers so you dont lose track of what you are doing and what layers your on.
After creating a duplication layer, we need to get into the Blending Options on the Layer Style, so there is two ways to get there. The way I did was to double click on the photo of layer, or the gray area of the layer (but not the title, as that will change the title of the layer) to go into the Layer style. The second way which was suggested by photoshopessentails.com was to click the "fx" and then click on "Blending Options...". So there is multiple ways to get the job done, so it'll be hard to forget how to do same things.
So the screen will pop up with something like this shown below.
After this comes up, we got to turn off the Green and Blue channels. Just located under Advance Blending there is a "Fill Opacity" and just below that there states 'Channels". As you can see there three boxes, R, G and B. To get the retro 3D effect, untick the G (Green) and B (Blue) box. To see if the effect work, click the visibility icon (the eye icon) on the original photo (layer 1) and background. If the duplicate layer is red, congratulation your nearly there.
Okay now, make the layers that you made invisible become visible by re-clicking the boxes that you made it invisible.
Make sure you are on the layer you made red, in my case, "3d test" and select the "Move tool" located here.
By selecting this tool, use your arrow keys on the keyboard to move the layer to the left. This creating this image. You can move it as much you like to the left, further away from the original photo the more out of focus the image will be.
Now congrats, you've now complete the "Retro 3D Movie Effect".
After completing that I changed the channel of the colour of the duplicate layer to see how it looked. Keeping in mind I will NOT move the layers, to get a good comparison.
So instead of doing the processing from the start again I just went into the Layer Style by doing the same process to get into it. So first, I did was re-select the G box and deselect the R box. This making the "Joker" vibe (from the D.C. Universe, archenemy of the Batman). Which I'll keep in mind when coming to proposal as it gives me a sick and insane feeling while looking at it.
I changed it again to see the other appearance of the last channel. Going back into Layer Style, deselecting the G box and re-selecting the B box.
Personally it give a more focused appeal, giving a light glow on the sides of the skull. This is either of the dark background around the skull or if this is a very faded and subtle colour effect.
Looking at all three different single colour channels, this is a good time experimenting the difference in effect it'll bring to the viewer.

The photo itself, might disturb most people but personally each different channel gives a different emotion. The first channel selected, Red channel, gives a cool/enjoyment vibe, the feeling as a child when first looking at a 3D book. The Green channel, gives me a different emotion, its an unsettling vibe, like I shouldn't be around this skull. Lastly the Blue channel, personally doesn't give me an emotion, just pops the detail of the photo.
