Film - Day 3, More filming but with the Black Magic Cinema Camera

Greetings!

Tuesday 21st of July 2020

We are using what our tutor calls Black Magic Cinema Cameras.

(get photos and film from Y drive, Visual Art Resource, Lv 4, NZCC104, NZCC week2, footage, DCIM, 100EOS7D)

First, looking over the film that we "create" last week, how we did while recording. James, our tutor said we didn't do bad for our first time but alot to improve.

First the camera was out of focus for the talent/actors, but not the slapper/marker, it was very well in focus. We should've put the camera in the manual focus, focal plane. Example is shown below.

Or a better example would be the footage,

The lighting wasn't that good either, either was too dark or the lighting was a bit of a contract (half very light and other half very dark), an example is shown below.

This is the Camera we'll be using for our paper, Black Magic Cinema Camera.

The Black Magic on tripod, just camera, without lens and battery.

The Camera Case

Back of the Camera and the Camera's Battery (note make sure the wires are secure, the wire/cord connecting the battery to camera was loose. The connection connecting to the battery wasn't secure, tutor suggested to tape it while recording)

The lens added to the camera (which later on didn't work with the camera so had to get a different type and brand)

(Enter Filming done outside)

Exposure (light) and Focus is main to photographing and film making!

I was camera person today recording, so I had more handling with the camera (today compared to last week) and learning how to use it.

Picture below shows the exposure that is needed for the type of lighting, and the colour that is produced by lighting.

Received picture/information on 21st of July 2020

You need to change the exposure to be able to film whatever you are filming. So if you are filming outside on a cloudy day, you have to change the exposure of the camera to 6000K to be able to capture whatever you are capturing.

Rules while filming:
  • Composition in thirds
  • Leading the background out?
  • Symmetry in backgrounds
  • Golden Ratio (homework)
  • What would you like in the frame? Or not in the frame.

Health and Safety while filming:
  • Careful when tightening and loosing the tripod, might snip your fingers.
  • Wear appropriate clothing where you are filming.
  • Turn the camera off while changing the lens, if not, the raw sunlight might fry the chip in the camera.
  • Shield the lenses while changing lens, to limit dust entering the camera.
  • Also while changing the lens communicate is a major as it'll be two person job. Whose holding the lens.
  • Fingers away from the lenses, while changing.

What type of filming did we do today?

James taught us the film technique called montage, which is a film edit technique where you take short shots of things and edited in a sequence for the audience to question and put to together.

An example of this is shown through this image:

image.slidesharecdn.com/russianmontage-14120807...
This image referenced through a video on this website: https://pt.slideshare.net/DGMediaSchool/russian-montage
Found on 21/0720

So the same image/short clip is used in the first part but then the second image is of another topic, and the audiences put two and two together in there own way.

Will I use this technique in my film?
I think this technique would be great for my short film and will put this technique probably where things are getting to out of control for the main character. While doing this maybe make each scene start to increase speed with each transition.
